I’m Doing it All Wrong - Podcast Edition

An experiment to use the tools I edit with more becomes something I want to do more... I think? And maybe even want someone to listen sometimes?

I should know better because I consult and advise people on how to do podcast, websites, and YouTubes.

Something something cobbler's family's shoes needing repair and all that.

A neon font reading "Night Brain" is overlaid a rainbow looking globe

Over a year ago, I had an idea for a podcast built around talking with friends about things that keep them up at night called "Conversations with My Night Brain", but the very idea of reaching out to friends or strangers to be on the podcast keeps me up at night, so instead I’m recording mini episodes of something I'm calling "Five Quick Things", but using the Conversations with my Night Brain feed to publish them rather than create a whole new podcast.

Confusing? Yes. But it gets worse.

1,440 people waiting for me to tell them how to use Audio Hijack better

I also started recording videos of myself doing Five Quick Things episodes that I post on my YouTube channel that has 1,400 followers hoping for some sort of audio or video tutorial related to podcasting or live streaming instead of starting a new channel for the Five Quick Things videos.

Just a screenshot of the channel, not an actual playable video here of course

And now I’m kind of enjoying doing the Five Quick Things style episodes because they're easier to produce and don't rely on a guest. And maybe I should force myself to do them on a regular schedule, rather than whenever I finally fill up the document with five things? But I know a schedule for it will take some of the fun out of it for me, so I leave it random and scattershot.

Which is exactly what any podcast consultant will tell you is the worst way to build any sort of audience for a podcast. p.s. Hire me!

How Can I Subscribe?

In summary: if you’d like to hear Five Quick Things episodes, you can subscribe to Conversations with My Night Brain wherever you get your podcasts. Or you can watch episodes of Five Quick Things by clicking through to the Conversations with my Night Brain episode pages and watch the unlisted videos there.

My creative mantra is: If I don't tell anyone about the things, I can't be sad when nobody listens or watches the things.

Oh, and I should probably put something in my newsletter someday?
