They / Them Explained by Dan McClennan

On most of Dan McClellan's videos he very patiently explains topics that people get willfully or ignorantly wrong. Dan usually includes an explainer of "Do not harass or report this creator or comment on their appearance or speech" in the description of all his videos asking his viewers to be kind.
But in the case of this video, he kind of just goes off on the ignorance displayed by the original video creator over They / Them pronouns which, in 2025, is honestly fair.
There's nothing complex about it. It's how language works.

If you're curious, asking questions in good faith, and trying to understand but get it wrong sometimes—I think you deserve all the time in the world to learn or adapt as language changes around you. It can be difficult when something has been one way for most of your life and then suddenly the world starts using words differently and the way you understand it is deemed wrong. But that doesn't mean people don't have grace for you when you make mistakes. It's how you handle the moment when you're corrected that determines whether you get more grace from people you've possibly hurt. Apologize.
Like the quote from Maya Angelou says:
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
But if you instead choose to double down on your ignorance and continue hurting people with language, that's when your heart gets a little darker and people want to avoid or argue with you.
